Cooling tower water distribution systems support heat transfer by delivering hot water evenly across the fill. Correct nozzle selection and positioning help maintain effective fill wetting and consistent cooling performance.
Clog-Resistant Spray Nozzles
Nozzles with large flow passages and suitable splash plates are designed to distribute water uniformly over the fill. Large orifices reduce the risk of blockages caused by accumulated solids. However, sediment, scale and debris still make regular inspection and cleaning necessary.
Properly selected nozzles can provide effective distribution at low operating pressure within their design flow range. Orifice size, spray pattern, nozzle spacing and distance above the fill should be considered together. Insufficient pressure or incorrect positioning can leave dry areas on the fill.
Gravity Distribution Basins
Commonly used in crossflow cooling towers, upper distribution basins deliver hot water to the fill by gravity through nozzles in the basin floor. Their accessible arrangement makes water distribution easier to inspect and simplifies cleaning.
Gravity distribution can reduce the pressure required for water distribution compared with pressurised spray systems. However, total pump head must account for elevation differences, pipe friction losses and resistance from other system components.
Correct Selection and Routine Maintenance
Distribution components should match the water quality, operating flow rate and tower geometry. Keeping nozzles and basins clean helps maintain uniform wetting and the intended cooling performance.
